This Research Consent explains the optional recovery research program described in Section 13 of the Privacy and Consumer Health Data Policy. The Terms are not research consent. You join only by turning research on in Settings → Privacy → Recovery research, and declining changes nothing about how the Service works for you or what you pay.

1. Why we ask

What you share is combined with thousands of others and studied only in aggregate — never as an individual story, and never by anyone reading your words. We use it to learn what genuinely helps people sustain long-term recovery and better mental health: which kinds of support work, for whom, and at what point in the journey. What we learn goes back into improving the Service for you, for the people who support you, and for the person who joins next week.

2. How it is kept separate

If you take part, we generate a random research token for you. It is not derived from your account and cannot be reversed. Research information is stored only against that token, in a separate store that contains no names, emails, phone numbers, or account identifiers.

3. What research information includes

Never included: your name, email, phone number, exact address or city, exact dates, direct messages, journals, safety reports, moderation records, or the retained text of anything you write.

4. Small groups are never reported

No statistic is produced from fewer than 10 people, and nothing is shared outside Nickelsense unless it reflects at least 30 different people.

5. Who receives research findings

We may sell or license aggregate, deidentified summary statistics built from research participants to researchers, health-care providers, and organizations working to improve long-term mental health and recovery. These are trends about groups of at least 30 people, never records about a person, and they are provided under contracts that prohibit re-identification. We never sell or give research data to advertisers. We may also publish aggregate findings, for example in a public report.

6. Turning it off

You can disconnect at any time in Settings → Privacy → Recovery research. We permanently destroy the link between your account and your research token, and new contributions stop immediately. Because that link is destroyed, contributions you already made remain part of the aggregate research — there is no longer any way for anyone, including us, to identify which ones were yours.

7. Your consent

The research switch starts off. By turning it on, you confirm that you are 18 or older, that you have read this Research Consent, and that you voluntarily agree to contribute the information in Section 3 for the purposes in Sections 1 and 5. We record the consent version, the date and time, and any withdrawal.
